Dental degrees, teaching authority and community practice
Expanded history9 sourced episodes
Black dentists earned credentials, built practices, challenged professional exclusion and led the institutions training the next generation. A degree, a faculty appointment, a clinic leadership role and an association decision each opened a different door.

Scope & research limits
Nine episodes connect named dentists to Harvard, Howard, Michigan, Meharry and the USC–Watts program, alongside Black professional organizing. An institutional appointment is not proof of a connection to your clinic; licensing and current workplace links still require their own records.

Dental education at Meharry
Meharry’s School of Dentistry identifies Black dental practitioners among those it seeks to mentor and train. Its current mission and program page lists general practice and pediatric dentistry residencies but does not date the start of those opportunities.
Where the connection stops The mission and program list do not establish when a person trained, qualified or was hired.
Howard and Meharry established dental schools serving Black students during segregation. Their training programs gave students direct access to clinical instruction and credentials that other institutions often denied them.
Dental schools evaluate applicants for admission. State boards separately determine eligibility to practice, including education and examination requirements.
These figures describe the published dentist occupation. A separate measure would be needed for your specific job title.
